USA Basketball has invited 33 of the nation's top freshmen and sophomores to participate in the U16 National Team Trials at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 23-27. The elite group will compete for 12 roster spots along with an additional 100 to 125 players who will attend the trials as part of the open application process. The entire trials roster will be announced prior to the star of trials in mid-May.
The team is expected to be announced early on May 27 after several days of workouts and scrimmages.
RALEIGH, NC -- The 16th edition of the Deep South Classic welcomed 272 teams in five age divisions from across the country to the Raleigh Convention Center.
While the highlight division was that of the 17U National Division featuring national-level program ranging from the A.O.T. Lady Rebels, Mac Irvin Fire, Exodus NYC and Miami Sun, there were plenty more in store for those in attendance.
HAMPTON, Va. -- The 27th Annual Boo Williams/Nike Invitational had more than its share of drama and superlative performances. In the final tally, none surpassed that of Asia Durr, point guard extraordinaire of the victorious Georgia Pistols Gold 2014. In leading her team to a clean slate of six wins versus no defeats, Durr was named Newport News [top section] Division MVP, one of the most prestigious honors in club basketball.
DALLAS, TX -- As always, when you cover a DFW Elite event you’re going to see some talented players from not only Texas but from the surrounding states. The Texas Spring Invitational showed that the DFW Elite pipeline continues to produce not just next level players but mid-to-high D1 players who will be Fresh 50 contenders along with one or two potential McDonald’s All-Americans in the mix.
Losing McDonald All-American center Kai James (Florida State signee), Raigyne Moncrief (LSU signee who set the tone on the team’s perimeter) and sharpshooter Brittany Brown (another FSU signee) does not appear to have slowed down the Suns based out of the greater Miami area and named after former club member and Sylvia Fowles of the Chicago Sky as a sponsor.
NEW ORLEANS – In true Big Easy fashion, where the Final Four festivities kicked off last night with a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with floats and shouts of “Throw me something, Mister” (or, in this case, “Miss”), the WBCA All-Americans eschewed the traditional red-and-blue uniforms for a purple-and-black motif with numbers and lettering in a neon-yellow-green hue never seen in nature.
NEW ORLEANS -- After dropping a team-high 15 points and pulling down seven rebounds in the WBCA All-American game, unsigned senior Jessica Jackson officially announced she has committed to Arkansas. The 6-2 forward, ranked No. 18 in the 2013 Full Court Fresh 50, chose the Razorbacks over Texas and Texas A&M.
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Mercedes Russell (Springfield, Ore.) posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds to help lead the West squad to a 92-64 trumping of the East team in the 12th Annual Girls McDonald’s All-American Game at the United Center in Chicago.
