Olympic schedule finalized after Sunday's Qualifying Tournament Draw

With a draw conducted immediately following the final game of its 2012 Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women, FIBA, the International Federation of Basketball, assigned the five teams – Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, France and Turkey – that qualified as a result of their tournament performances to the two previously established groups, finalizing the preliminary-round schedule for London 2012’s Olympic women’s basketball competition.

Angola, the United States and China had already been assigned to Group A in a draw conducted on April 30, 2012 as part of the organization’s Central Board meeting in Rio de Janeiro. After Sunday’s secondary draw, they will be joined by the Czech Republic, Croatia and Turkey, all which qualified by virtue of their quarterfinal victories at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Friday.

Meanwhile, Group B – regarded by some as “the group of death” due to the presence of perennial powerhouses Russia, Australia and Brazil, as well as host nation Great Britain which, will be joined by France, another longtime European basketball power, which qualified with its quarterfinal victory at the tournament Friday, and Canada, which takes up the final spot after winning qualification with its victory over Japan in Sunday’s Qualifying Tournament finale.

Olympic women’s basketball play, which opens on July 28, the day after the Olympic opening ceremony, will initially consist of round-robin play among the six teams in each group on alternating days.

The top four teams from each group will advance to the Aug. 7 quarterfinals, and proceed from there under a single-elimination format through the semifinals (Aug. 9) to the medal-round games on Aug. 11.

The bottom two teams from each preliminary-round group will fall into a classification bracket, as will the other teams falling out of medal contention at each stage along the way.

With the field now set and the bracketing out of the way, the following Olympic schedule has been finalized:
