It was almost three years ago exactly that Bria Holmes of Hillhouse HS in New Haven, CT, was first brought to national attention by a poster on this forum who kept touting her skills. Those posts prompted me to attend my first Connecticut AAU tournaments and begin a more serious venture into following prep baskeball.

Hillhouse went on to an upset win in the CT class LL championship in 2009, let by freshman wing Bria Holmes and sophomore PG Andreanna Thomas. Hillhouse repeated as LL champions in 2010 and 2011. Thomas graduated, and now is a freshman and the backup PG at Hofstra.

Last evening Hillhouse was upset by Newtown, 65-60, as Newtown furiously came back from a 15 point deficit in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Academics 28-8 in the final period. There will be no "fourpeat" for Hillhouse.  Holmes had 29 points.

Bria Holmes went on to become the first McDonald's All American from Connecticut, but was apparently not offered by UConn after several looks. She has signed with West Virginia. Sources close to the program said last month that her academic qualifications were not yet complete as of that time.

She turned out to be a very good player -- one of the few instances where hyping an unknown turned out to be a good move.
