ORLANDO, FL –Breanna Stewart (Cicero-North Syracuse H.S.), the USA Basketball player of the Year, took over the fourth quarter to lead the U18 National Team to a 73-66 come from behind win over the U17 World Championship Team.
The USA Basketball Training Camp scrimmage featured eight 2012 High School All Americans, and over a dozen players who will likely be 2013 All-Americans. The rare head-to-head competition between the nation’s top talent was definitely entertaining as both teams tuned up for today’s games against Brazil at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports.
Memorial Day Weekend, with the exception of April Evaluation Period, is a very busy and exciting couple of days for girls travel ball. There is a multitude of tournaments spanning across the country. I decided to split my time between two in particular the Adidas Memorial Day Showcase in Franklin, Tenn and the Alabama AAU State Championships in Birmingham, Ala. There were many very talented players in grades ranging from 6-11. The following players from both events caught my eye with noteworthy performances.
PHOENIX, AZ – Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi will be out indefinitely with a strained left hip flexor, the club announced today. Taurasi did not travel with the team to Atlanta for tonight’s contest against the Eastern Conference defending Dream. She will be re-evaluated daily.
Just six weeks ago, Tiffany Hayes was the 14th pick in the WNBA draft by the Atlanta Dream. During her college career the 5-10 guard made four Final Four appearances and won two National Championships with the University of Connecticut. During her senior year Hayes lead the Huskies in steals and was second on the team in scoring. I had a chance to catch up with the two-time All-Big East Team player for a quick Q&A on how things are going as a WNBA rookie.
KK: How exciting was it for you to be drafted by the Atlanta Dream?
On Thursday a cross-conference match up between Atlanta and Phoenix will also be a battle between Angel McCoughtry and Diana Taurasi, two exciting and offensively minded players. While both teams have gotten off to a slow 1-2 start, watch for the battle between these two Olympic teammates to heat up.
The Indiana Fever return the core of their starting lineup and look to be playoff bound in 2012.
That's stating the obvious, since the Fever have made the post-season for the past seven years and are annually one of the best teams in the East. They own the longest string of playoff appearances in the Eastern Conference, second in the WNBA only to the Seattle Storm with eight.
In the early days of the WNBA when all the franchises were sisters to NBA operations, most of the teams took on nicknames akin to those of big brother. So when Washington arrived to become part of the same ownership of the NBA Wizards, it seemed appropriate to be called the Mystics. The Washington Mystics claim to be celebrating their 15th season in the WNBA, one less than the entire history of the pro league launched in the summer of 1997. Truth be told, there hasn’t been much to celebrate in that span.

In 2011 their 27-7 record was the best in the league and they won the championship after going 7-1 in the playoffs. The 2012 team returns 96.1% of their points, 93.6% of the rebounds, 95.1% of the assists and 93.9% of the minutes of that championship team.
