Dream beat shorthanded Mercury by 16

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Sancho Lyttle and Cathrine Kraayeveld scored 12 points apiece Thursday and the Atlanta Dream rolled to an 81-65 win over the shorthanded Phoenix Mercury.

USA Basketball Training Camp Scrimmage: U18 comes from behind to defeat U17

 

ORLANDO, FL –Breanna Stewart (Cicero-North Syracuse H.S.), the USA Basketball player of the Year, took over the fourth quarter to lead the U18 National Team to a 73-66 come from behind win over the U17 World Championship Team.

The USA Basketball Training Camp scrimmage featured eight 2012 High School All Americans, and over a dozen players who will likely be 2013 All-Americans. The rare head-to-head competition between the nation’s top talent was definitely entertaining as both teams tuned up for today’s games against Brazil at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports. 

Talented players emerge at the Adidas Memorial Day Showcase and Alabama AAU State Championships

Memorial Day Weekend, with the exception of April Evaluation Period, is a very busy and exciting couple of days for girls travel ball.  There is a multitude of tournaments spanning across the country. I decided to split my time between two in particular the Adidas Memorial Day Showcase in Franklin, Tenn and the Alabama AAU State Championships in Birmingham, Ala.  There were many very talented players in grades ranging from 6-11. The following players from both events caught my eye with noteworthy performances.

Diana Taurasi sidelined with hip injury

PHOENIX, AZ – Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi will be out indefinitely with a strained left hip flexor, the club announced today. Taurasi did not travel with the team to Atlanta for tonight’s contest against the Eastern Conference defending Dream. She will be re-evaluated daily.

Sky take down Silver Stars

San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Sylvia Fowles dropped in a game-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Chicago Sky knocked off the San Antonio Silver Stars, 77-63, on Wednesday.

Whalen's layup keeps Lynx unbeaten

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Lindsay Whalen's layup with one second left kept the Minnesota Lynx unbeaten with a 79-77 win over the Washington Mystics on Wednesday night.

Sparks beat Shock on Toliver's last-second three-pointer

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Kristi Toliver committed 14 turnovers, but atoned for her mistakes by hitting a three-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the Los Angeles Sparks to a 76-75 win over the winless Tulsa Shock.

Rookie Interview: Tiffany Hayes of the Atlanta Dream

Just six weeks ago, Tiffany Hayes was the 14th pick in the WNBA draft by the Atlanta Dream.  During her college career the 5-10 guard made four Final Four appearances and won two National Championships with the University of Connecticut.  During her senior year Hayes lead the Huskies in steals and was second on the team in scoring.  I had a chance to catch up with the two-time All-Big East Team player for a quick Q&A on how things are going as a WNBA rookie.
