Former Tennessee greats, Catchings and Caldwell, speak on Pat Summitt

After 38 years of roaming the sidelines, Pat Summitt officially stepped down as Head Coach of the Tennessee Lady Volunteers on Wednesday. During the official press conference held the following day, she symbolically handed her whistle over to her top assistant, Holly Warlick, who has been by her side for 27 seasons and was also a former player.  Summitt will assume new duties as head coach emeritus, activiely helping with recruiting and continuing to be a champion for the women's basketball program at the University of Tennessee.

President Obama honors Summitt with Presidential Medal of Freedom

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama named Patricia "Pat" Head Summitt, 38-year head coach and recently named head coach emeritus of the University of Tennessee's women's basketball team, as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Thursday. The Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Griner bows out of 2012 Olympic Games

Baylor star Brittney Griner withdrew her name today from consideration from the senior national women's basketball team that will represent the United States at the London Olympics this summer. Griner was named to the Senior National Team pool on Aug. 1, 2011, and was identified as a finalist for the Olympic team on Feb. 13, 2012.

Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - Pat Summitt reflected on her storied career as women's basketball coach at Tennessee on Thursday, one day after it was announced that she would step aside and take a new role as head coach emeritus, and called it a "privilege" to spend nearly four decades guiding the Lady Vols' program.

If Wednesday's announcement by the University of Tennessee that Hall-of-Fame coach Pat Summitt was steppping down from the head coaching position she has held for the past 38 years marked the end of an era, then the contemporaneous designation of her successor did not exactly mark the beginning of a new one.
