Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Stanford senior forward Chiney Ogwumike
captured the John R. Wooden Award, given to the collegiate basketball player
of the year.
A two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year, Ogwumike became the first recipient from both Stanford and the Pac-12.
Ogwumike ended the season fourth in the country in scoring (26.1 ppg), ninth in rebounding (12.1 rpg), fourth in field-goal percentage (.601), and third in double-doubles (27). She is the Pac-12's all-time leading scorer and rebounder.
She helped lead Stanford to a 33-4 record and into the program's 12th Final Four and sixth in the last seven years.
Odyssey Sims of Baylor finished second in the voting and Breanna Stewart of national champion Connecticut was third.
Creighton sharpshooter Doug McDermott was selected as the men's winner last week at the Final Four in Arlington.
