Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Aleighsa Welch had 16 points with seven
rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots to lead No. 6 South Carolina
past Arkansas, 67-49, at Colonial Center on Sunday.
Tiffany Mitchell added 15 points and eight boards for South Carolina (22-2, 10-1 SEC), which won its sixth straight tilt after an overtime loss at Texas A&M on Jan. 16. Elem Ibiam and Alaina Coates contributed 10 points apiece to help the Gamecocks stay unbeaten at home this season.
Keira Peak and Calli Berna each scored nine points for the Razorbacks (16-8, 3-8), who have lost four of five. Peak also contributed seven rebounds and five steals in the setback.
The result of this one was never in doubt. Mitchell's three-point play around the second media timeout gave South Carolina a 15-6 lead. Peak was the lone Arkansas player to make a field goal until Jhasmin Bowen's layup with a little over three minutes to go in the first half. South Carolina led 31-13 at that point and owned a 33-18 halftime advantage.
Berna's triple 4 1/2 minutes into the second half cut Arkansas's deficit to 10, but Coates countered with a jumper before Mitchell and Welch each had three-point plays for a 45-27 edge.
The lead reached 21 as South Carolina cruised to the finish line.
