College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Breanna Stewart scored 26 points to
lead all scorers and Moriah Jefferson added 15 points as the top-ranked
Connecticut Huskies used a dominant second half to cruise past No. 8 Maryland,
72-55, on Friday at Comcast Center.
Alyssa Thomas scored 20 points with 14 rebounds and Katie Rutan chipped in 11 points for Maryland (2-1) in the loss.
UConn (3-0) has now beaten two Top-10 teams this week after taking down No. 3 Stanford at home on Monday.
Thomas made a jumper with 1:37 left in the first to give Maryland a 38-37 lead, but that would be the last time the Lady Terrapins would be up on the scoreboard.
UConn ended the first half on a 6-0 run, as Bria Hartley hit 2-of-3 from the free-throw line with under a second left to send the Huskies into the break with a 43-38 lead.
Rutan made a 3-pointer 1:01 into the second half which tied the game, 43-43. UConn then went on an 8-0 run, capped by a Jefferson layup, to take its largest lead of game to that point.
The Huskies held Maryland at bay from there, never allowing the Lady Terrapins to get closer than six before running away with the victory down the stretch.
UConn plays at Penn State on Sunday and Maryland will face George Washington at home on Tuesday.
