New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Connecticut will start the women's college
basketball season the same way it ended the 2012-13 campaign, as the top team
in the nation.
UConn won its eighth national championship last April with a 93-60 drubbing of Louisville and on Friday received all 36 first-place votes from a nationwide media panel in the preseason Associated Press poll.
It's the ninth time the Huskies will start the season as the nation's top team. They went on to win the national title on five of those occasions.
Duke, Stanford, Tennessee and Louisville round out the top five, followed by Notre Dame, Kentucky, Maryland, California and Baylor. The Lady Bears were the preseason No. 1 each of the last two years and won the 2012 title, but will be without superstar Brittney Griner and four other seniors.
The second 10 consists of Oklahoma, North Carolina, Penn State, Dayton, LSU, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Purdue, Colorado and Michigan State. Oklahoma is picked to win the Big 12 ahead of Baylor this year.
Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Iowa State, Georgia and Gonzaga are the last five teams ranked.
